Brief History of MCQ
The concept of MCQ originated in the seventies of the last century with a small group of concerned, dedicated and visionary Muslim brothers and sisters (Founders). Only one mosque existed at the time in Montreal to satisfy the religious and prayer needs of the community. Initially the Muslim population of Montréal was very small but in the late seventies of the last century it increased rapidly due to wars and economic problems in the world. With the increase in Muslim population the community needed, beside mosque, other Islamic institutions to conduct their lives according to the Islamic Injunctions. Recognizing the institutional needs of the community, the MCQ was established in 1979 and launched institutions; such as Muslim school (Elementary and High School) teaching regular curriculum plus Islamic studies, financial institution for halal investments and financing of family homes compliant with sharia, Mosque, Community Center. The school is 29 years old and the financial institution (Qurtuba Housing Coop) is 20 years old both are now operating independently. There are other Islamic institutional projects that are in various stages of discussion and planning.
The supreme administrative body of MCQ is called “The Council of Trustees”. The council comprises of 25 members that includes a President, secretary, Imam and a treasurer. The other members are assigned responsibilities such as building maintenance, fund raising, organizing seminars, iftar program, legal problems, financial statement, tax and insurance.
